    Endometrial patterns in abnormal uterine bleeding: a retrospective study

    Background: Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) is a common reason for women of all ages to consult their gynecologist and is one of the most common debilitating menstrual problems ending up in hysterectomy in developing countries. The aim of the present study was to determine the clinical spectrum and frequency of pathologies in endometrial biopsy of patients with AUB in our population. We also tried to observe the incidence of various pathologies in different age groups presenting with abnormal uterine bleeding.Methods: The study was conducted in SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, Tamil Nadu over a period of eight months. This was a retrospective study done on 217 patients presenting with abnormal uterine bleeding who underwent endometrial sampling in our hospital. The pattern of endometrial changes were studied and classified.Results: Age of the patients in our study ranged from 25 years to 68 years with maximum in the age group of 41-50 years. The commonest clinical feature was menorrhagia followed by metrorrhagia. Evaluation of the endometrium revealed various histopathological patterns like proliferative endometrium, secretory endometrium, disordered proliferative endometrium, pill endometrium, shedding endometrium, simple hyperplasia, complex hyperplasia, atrophic endometrium, endometrial polyp, carcinoma endometrium etc.The incidence of malignancy was 1.84%.Conclusions: Histopathological examination of the endometrium showed a wide spectrum of pathological changes ranging from normal endometrium to malignancy thus emphasizing the importance of endometrial sampling as an important diagnostic tool in the management of abnormal uterine bleeding. Accurate analysis of endometrial samplings is the key to effective therapy and optimal outcome

    Aligning Individual and Organizational R&D Goals for Self-Sustainability: Investigating Preferences of Researchers in Selected CSIR-Laboratories, India

    This paper intends to explore the measure for aligning the goals of researchers towards achieving organizational R&D targets. The paper also explores the significance and ordering of R&D outputs and the factors that influence generation of R&D outputs, from the perspective of researchers working in the Indian public sector organizations. Data was collected in five Indian R&D laboratories and Weighted Average Method; Spearman Correlation Coefficient and Rank Regression were utilized for the analysis. The findings indicated that various groups of researchers prefer to target different R&D outputs and not all the factors are considered as equally significant in influencing the generation of R&D outputs. Further, the R&D organization should include preferred real factors while policy making for achieving collaborative efforts towards fulfilling organizational objectives. The set of selected R&D outputs and influencing factors were also ordered according to the average rankings given by the researchers. The findings can help R&D managers to identify the expectations of the researchers and include their preferences in R&D Planning. The study could be extended to a larger dataset of researchers working in other government as well as private R&D organizations. Hardly any studies were found that explored the preferences of researchers with respect to R&D outputs and influencing factors with respect to the Indian public sector R&D laboratories.     A R&D productivity model to achieve self-sustainability for public funded/CSIR R&D laboratories, India

    Purpose – The paper develops a model for enhancing R&D productivity for Indian public funded laboratories. The paper utilizes the productivity data of five Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) laboratories for analysis and to form the constructs of the model. Design/methodology/approach – The weighted average method was employed for analyzing the rankings of survey respondents pertaining to the significant measures enhancing R&D involvement of researchers and significant non-R&D jobs. The authors have proposed a model of productivity. Various individual, organizational and environmental constructs related to the researchers working in the CSIR laboratories have been outlined that can enhance R&D productivity of researchers in Indian R&D laboratories. Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) was used to find the predictability of the productivity model. Findings – The organizational factors have a crucial role in enhancing the R&D outputs of CSIR laboratories. The R&D productivity of researchers can be improved through implementing the constructs of the proposed model of productivity. Research limitations/implications – The R&D productivity model can be adapted by the R&D laboratories to enhance researchers’ R&D involvement, increased R&D outputs and achieving self-sustenance in long run. Practical implications – The R&D laboratories can initiate exercises to explore the most relevant factors and measures to enhance R&D productivity of their researchers. The constructs of the model can function as a guideline to introduce the most preferable research policies in the laboratory for overall mutual growth of laboratory and the researchers. Originality/value – Hardly any studies have been found that have focused on finding the measures of enhancing R&D involvement of researchers and the influence of significant time-intensive jobs on researchers’ productivity.     E-Profiling R&D Involvement/Earnings of Researchers: A G2E Tool for Performance Management at CSIR-NML

    CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory (CSIR-NML) has launched a number of initiatives in different perspectives of e-Government. The ‘Mandays-Involvement’ website was implemented by the laboratory in Government to Employee (G2E) perspective i.e. facilitating its R&D Manpower by providing data with respect to their own performance parameters through a single window. The development & implementation of the website had two major objectives : (1) to provide a system to the researchers for tracking and improving their own performance with respect to mandays and External Cash Flow (ECF) generation (2) to equip the management with a tool to enhance the organizational performance and enable optimum employee utilization. Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) approach was followed for the web-based system development and Iterative model was used. Open source web development tools i.e. Php, My-Sql and CSS were used for the system development. The new system helped in detailed profiling of current and future assignment of the researchers so as to have a check over preference based allocation of work and providing equal opportunities of work to all. The percentage average mandays utilization was stabilized after the implementation of the website. The percentage under and over engagements of researchers in R&D projects was controlled and reduced. The system outputs are utilized for R&D Team formation, Project approvals and Annual Performance Evaluations. This new information system acts as a Decision Support System (DSS) that helps the management to align its organizational policies towards the Future Research Projects and R&D Manpower

    A Comparative Study on Apiculture Technology among Trained and Untrained Women

    The present study aimed to assess the ‘level of skill’ of rural women about scientific apiculture practices and to find the relationship of different characteristics of women with their level of apiculture practice skill. Total 100 respondents were selected from Pusa block of Samastipur district. Seven villages were selected purposively in which 50 trained who have received training from Apicultural Research Training Centre , RAU Pusa to serve as experimental group and equal number of untrained women who have not undergone any skill oriented apiculture training programme were also selected randomly to serve as control group. The study indicated that the trained women differed significantly over the untrained women in respect of their improvement in skill. The proportion of trained women was more in ‘high level of skill’ of improved apiculture practices in comparision to the untrained women. Multiple regression analysis revealed that three characteristics i.e. caste family education and economic motivation contributed positively and significantly towards improvement in level of skill of recommended technologies among trained women. Hence, it can be said that training has positive impact on apiculture practices of women beekeepers. DOI: 10.17762/ijritcc2321-8169.15012

    Support matrix machine: A review

    Support vector machine (SVM) is one of the most studied paradigms in the realm of machine learning for classification and regression problems. It relies on vectorized input data. However, a significant portion of the real-world data exists in matrix format, which is given as input to SVM by reshaping the matrices into vectors. The process of reshaping disrupts the spatial correlations inherent in the matrix data. Also, converting matrices into vectors results in input data with a high dimensionality, which introduces significant computational complexity. To overcome these issues in classifying matrix input data, support matrix machine (SMM) is proposed. It represents one of the emerging methodologies tailored for handling matrix input data. The SMM method preserves the structural information of the matrix data by using the spectral elastic net property which is a combination of the nuclear norm and Frobenius norm. This article provides the first in-depth analysis of the development of the SMM model, which can be used as a thorough summary by both novices and experts. We discuss numerous SMM variants, such as robust, sparse, class imbalance, and multi-class classification models. We also analyze the applications of the SMM model and conclude the article by outlining potential future research avenues and possibilities that may motivate academics to advance the SMM algorithm

    Anticancer Activities of Plant Secondary Metabolites: Rice Callus Suspension Culture as a New Paradigm

    Plant natural products including alkaloids, polyphenols, terpenoids and flavonoids have been reported to exert anticancer activity by targeting various metabolic pathways. The biological pathways regulated by plant products can serve as novel drug targets. Plant natural compounds or their derivatives used for cancer treatment and some novel plant-based compounds which are used in clinical trials were discussed. Callus suspension culture with secondary metabolites can provide a continuous source of plant pharmaceuticals without time and space limitations. Previous research has shown that rice callus suspension culture can kill \u3e95% cancer cells with no significant effect on the growth of normal cells. The role of candidate genes and metabolites which are likely to be involved in the process and their potential to serve as anticancer and anti-inflammatory agents were discussed. Large scale production of plant callus suspension culture and its constituents can be achieved using elicitors which enhance specific secondary metabolites combined with bioprocess technology

    Host range of Phellinus sensu lato in India: An overview

    Phellinus Quel. is a member of family Hymenochaetaceae of the order Hymenochaetales. This genus comprises wood-inhabiting, saprophytic and parasitic species. Species of Phellinus sensu lato are known to have large host range and cause white rot of various types to live standing or dead trees from all over the world. The current study is based on a thorough study of literature to document the host range of Phellinus species from India. The study indicated that one hundred and seventy four plant species from 51 families are found to be infected by Phellinus species. The families found to be the most affected are Fabaceae, Combretaceae, Meliaceae, Dipterocarpaceae, Anacardiaceae, Myrtaceae, Meliaceae, Lauraceae, Fagaceae, Rosaceae.  Many plant (tree) species are affected by Phellinus; this establishes it as a potential pathogen and wood decay fungi. The present study also reports Phellinus from almost all over India and every climatic zones. This indicated the high tolerance and acclimatization of Phellinus towards diverse climatic conditions. The most affected host is Artocarpus followed by Terminalia and Acacia. Although the study reports Phellinus from diverse climatic zones of India, the most affected families and genera are from moist tropical conditions. This indicates that Phellinus has vigorous activity in warm and moist areas and affects diverse plant/tree species in these areas like Maharashtra and Kerala. The states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telengana, Union Territories, Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland are still left to be explored. The present study has key significance in biodiversity, medicinal as well as the pathogenic study of Phellinus. It provides an overall host range of genus Phellinus, confirming its vast host diversity. The information could further be used in disease, biodiversity and plant pathological assessments

    Involvement and productivity of research and development workers: A case study of a publicly-funded research laboratory

    Purpose The effect of global integration of businesses and interchange of ideas and technology through internet has many facets. Increase in economic recessions and decrease in research funding has forced both private and public sector research organizations to introduce measures of self-sustainability. Enhancing research and development (R&D) productivity of researchers can be one of those measures. The purpose of this paper is to attempt toward identifying and analyzing those factors of productivity that may be related to the manpower in R&D. Design/methodology/approach Based upon the theoretical background and the nature of data available, this empirical study has been carried out as a case study for a public sector research laboratory. The extent of involvement in research projects have been analyzed with respect to the R&D outputs generated by the researchers, which if found to be positively related, may be focussed upon, for increasing productivity of manpower in R&D. Several other determinants of R&D productivity were identified from the literature review and were analyzed in association with the “involvement.” “Robust Regression” technique was used for the statistical analysis. Findings It was found that the R&D productivity of researchers has a positive correlation with their extent of involvement in the R&D projects. Practical implications The result may help in creation of the policies for enhancing organizational self-sustainability. Originality/value Several prior studies have been conducted with different determinants of R&D productivity but hardly any studies were found considering “extent of manpower involvement in research projects.” This study can be useful for public sector research organizations to relate the findings with their endeavors of enhancing R&D productivity
